The former president has now been indicted in Florida in the classified documents case and in New York City on charges involving hush money payments to a porn star before the 2016 election. Mr. Woodward has worked for several Jan. 6 defendants — including one convicted last year of seditious conspiracy — while also representing Walt Nauta, Mr. Trump’s co-defendant in the classified documents case, and several witnesses embroiled in the Trump-related grand jury investigations. Investigators also sought information from him in connection with an inquiry into Mr. Trump’s fund-raising off his false claims of widespread fraud affecting the election. On Thursday, Mr. Russell was asked a series of questions about his interactions with Mr. Trump before the former president’s departure from the White House, according to a person familiar with the appearance. More than once, Mr. Russell got up and left the proceedings to consult with Mr. Woodward after prosecutors asked questions related to his discussions with Mr. Trump, the person familiar with the appearance said.

But the focus on the tapes is the latest effort by Mr. Smith to determine whether Mr. Trump or his aides engaged in any sort of obstructive behavior. There is no indication that Mr. Taveras is a subject of Mr. Smith’s investigation. All three men — Mr. Taveras, Mr. Deoliveira and Mr. Nauta — have been questioned extensively by prosecutors over their roles in handling the boxes and the tapes. Nonetheless, one person briefed on the events said the interactions concerning the security tapes were enough to arouse suspicion among Mr. Smith’s investigators. Moreover, people briefed on witness interviews say, it has become clear that Mr. Smith views a number of people connected to Mr. Trump with skepticism.

Walt Nauta, a longtime Trump aide, was seen moving boxes out from a storage room the FBI searched. Nauta was seen moving boxes before and after the DOJ demanded top-secret files be returned in May. Intrigue has swirled around what was kept in the storage room, and whether anything was removed from it before the DOJ searched Trump's property. The Times' piece dropped hours after The Washington Post reported that Trump himself explicitly directed employees to move boxes of White House documents from the storage room. After the raid, the FBI carted off 11,000 documents from Mar-a-Lago, including some that were marked "CLASSIFIED."
